➀ Vishay is investing £51 million in Newport Wafer Fab, now renamed Newport Vishay. The investment follows a £142 million purchase in November 2023 from Nexperia, a subsidiary of Shanghai's Wingtech, in a government-enforced sale. The Welsh government has supported the investment with an additional £5 million. The deal included a condition that the UK government be informed if Vishay plans to dispose of the plant. ➁ Welsh Government Economy Secretary Rebecca Evans highlighted Wales' increasing role as a world leader in semiconductor production, emphasizing the importance of compound semiconductors in everyday life and their strong global growth projections. ➂ Evans mentioned the positive impact of the investment on Wales, including attracting significant inward investment, providing state-of-the-art facilities, fostering R&D, and creating well-paid job opportunities.
