The comet, 2024 S1 ATLAS, reached its perihelion, or closest approach to the Sun, on Sunday. ➁ The comet was discovered on September 27, 2024, and was initially thought to be an asteroid. ➂ It vaporized after passing within 1% of Earth's distance to the Sun, similar to the myth of Icarus.
