Sony's original Spider-Man game has been a massive success, generating nearly $4 billion in revenue within two years of its release. This impressive figure does not include sales from Miles Morales or Spider-Man 2.
The game, developed by Insomniac, has sold 20 million copies worldwide, a significant achievement for any video game. The success of the game was also attributed to Sony's strategy of bundling it with PlayStation 4 consoles, which significantly boosted revenue beyond the game's original $59.99 MSRP.
According to a LinkedIn post by a Sony Interactive Entertainment marketing manager, the game's revenue surge was 971% in its first year, which is a testament to its popularity and the effectiveness of the marketing efforts.
Insomniac is currently working on a new Marvel-based game, a gritty adaptation of X-Men's Wolverine, set to launch on PS5 in 2025. The development team is expected to share more details at this year's Game Awards event.
