➀ The Fraunhofer Institute for Energy Economics and Energy System Technology IEE is developing an innovative, multifunctional charging and drive unit for electric vehicles in the 'CombiPower' project. The project started in late 2023 and runs until September 2026. ➁ Modern electric vehicles are equipped with a variety of inverters: AC or DC chargers, drive inverters, and DCDC boosters for charging 800V vehicles at 400V charging stations. Combining these inverters into a multifunctional drive and charging unit has the potential to reduce system volume and weight, increase efficiency, and minimize costs. ➂ The bidirectional construction of the modular charging and drive unit not only allows for the reverse feeding of electrical energy from the vehicle battery to the grid but also provides additional inherent grid stabilization through its grid-forming control design, expanding the Vehicle-to-X functionality through grid-forming properties.
